Colour Representation

Colours tend to have a big influence on how people feel and so the colour you decorate a room could have a big impact on how you feel about the room. This is why a lot of thought should go into what kind of colours you are going to use in any room you are re-decorating. There are certain colours suited to specific rooms over others, for example bright red would not be thought of as a good idea for a room such as your bedroom, this is because bright red is not seen as a relaxing colour, however, a light red can work quite well in a kitchen. It is, of course down, to personal choice and every colour has a different meaning to each person.

When choosing your colours for your room you should keep in mind how you want the room to feel after you have finished decorating. Warmer colours encourage the brain to relax, and prevent over-stimulation, so in rooms you want to feel relaxed you might want to use colours such as dark reds, burgandies, dark orange or browns. The reason we feel so relaxed in a room with these 'warm' colours is that brighter colours encourage the brain to keep alert.

If you are more interested in a bright and cheerful room, lighter colours such as yellow and orange will be ideal. Lighter tones allow a lighter, more cheerful tone to the room, with yellow colours typically signifying happiness and sunshine. Orange hues are also a nice choice, as they are considered to be friendly and informal.

If you are after a more calming colour for your room then you may want to consider a green or blue tone because these are commonly associated with nature, this being the reason many spas and treatment centres opt for these colours. These kind of colours are also a popular choice for bathrooms for the nature link to water and these marine colours.

If you are going to have more than one colour in the same room you'll need to make sure that they will work well together, for example a room with bright blue and bright orange used on the walls wouldn't look as visually appealing as a wall with blue and beige together. If your unsure of what you think will look good together there are plenty of paint companies that have colour charts you can refer to before choosing your paints or there are many online colour charts to choose from that will give you a general idea of colours you could use together.

Before choosing a colour scheme, bear in mind the room's use, as the colours you select will set the tone of the room.
