Consumer Guide

There are a large number of pitfalls that even the most experienced consumer can fall into when hiring a painter or decorator. Thus it is important for consumers to remain vigilant at all times. There are a number of common pitfalls that a potential consumer should look for when hiring a decorator or interior designer.

As with many skilled trades, decorators may take exams, the results of which can be used to prove the decorators skill. When a decorator applies for entry into a professional organisation, part of the requirements he will have to meet will often be passing exams, or passing independent inspections of their work. It is wise to employ a decorator who is part of a professional organisation, as these organisations often have benefits for both the contractor and the customer, such as an arbitration service. Decorators as part of an organisation will commonly be aware of the latest regulations and rules regarding their job, so you can rest assured that your newly decorated home complies with building regulations.

It is wise to meet your designer face to face, in order to acquaint yourself with your decorator, and so you can be sure he will stick to your design ideas. A face to face meeting allows you to fully explain your ideas to the designer, and perhaps accept advice from the designer on ideas or compromises to save money. When meeting the designer, you should also get a written quotation, as this can give you some backup if you think you have been overcharged.

When getting a quotation, ensure you know what is covered in the quoted price. Some decorators may exclude certain taxes or fees, and so it is important to know this beforehand, as it will allow you to make a more accurate budget for the work. Try to negotiate a fixed labour fee for all work done, as many labourers charge by the hour, which can make the final bill very expensive, particularly if unforeseen delays occur.

Redecorating your home should be a pleasurable experience, and the contractor you hire should make the whole task as simple and stress-free as possible. You should research your contractor before hiring them - ask for references, and if possible, interview the contractor to reassure yourself that they will follow your plans, and that you feel as though you can trust them.
