Fixtures in Decorating

Features such as bannisters, door frames, window frames or even lighting fixtures tend to blend into the background of a room because they are mainly functional pieces, by changing the look of these you can change the whole look of the room at very little cost. If you want to make these pieces more distinct then you should bear in mind that they will still need to co-ordinate with the rest of the rooms decor.

How To Paint a Room Trim

The traditional way to paint a room trim is to select a colour that matches or co-ordinates with the existing colour scheme. Probably the most common choice of colour for a rooms trim is white, but also fairly common is brown and even black, which ever colour matches the style of the room best. More recently, however, it is becoming more popular for a rooms trim to enhance the decor rather than blend in, for example using a turquoise colour for the trim when the walls are grey and accessories are turquoise.

Painting Light Fixtures

Painting a light fixture can be the easiest way to make a big change to a room because lighting is one of the most important features of a room. The material the light fitting is made of will determine what changes you can make to it, for example if you have a glass light fixture the options will be more limited than that for a metal light fixture. With metal light fixtures you can change them easily by painting or adding a high gloss finish, if doing this yourself you need to make sure you prepare the metal before painting. For your safety you should also remove the lighting fixture from the electric connection before beginning work, if you take the fixture down it also makes it easier to reach all parts of the fixture.

Spray Painting Fixtures

Spray painting fixtures can be a great way to ensure even coverage and can be especially useful for painting smaller parts of fixtures that may be difficult to reach with a paint brush. Also if you spray paint the fixture it ensures even coverage and the paint is less likely to run if applied in light spray coats.

Just by making some simple changes to your fixtures can make an amazing difference to the room and it need not cost you a lot of money. Just be sure you protect any areas you don't want painting with tape or cloth, prepare the surfaces properly to achieve the best finish and make sure you use the correct paints.
