TV and Decorating

Extreme Makeover: Home EditionA decade ago, to get a home that looked like it had come from the pages of an interior design magazine, you had to employ a designer and decorators to achieve the desired result.

However, in 1996, "Changing Rooms" was broadcast for the first time and now everyday people could have their house decorated in high quality design styles for no charge. 'Changing Rooms' and the many similar shows that started to air would give hints and tips on decorating techniques for those wanting to attempt decorating themselves.

With these types of show becoming increasingly popular many people now try to complete their own decorating with some of the methods they learn from the shows. Of course, there were shows dedicated to home decorating prior to the boom, however these tended to be a lot more specialist, and tended to be more factual rather than entertaining. There are many people that would watch the shows simply because of the entertainment factor and often to watch the reaction of homeowners when they reveal the new decoration of their home.

House InvadersWith the variety of people that host the shows they have been able to spread the interest across wide audiences, meaning they appeal not only to people that have an interest in decorating but to a much more general audience.

The influence TV shows has had on the decorating industry is apparent in the way that decorating is shown to be much simpiler.
